A walk through chestnut groves and vineyards

The Keschtnweg (Eisacktal Chestnut trail) is a public footpath leading through the lush chestnut groves that cover the Eisacktal uplands. Some of the giant trees lining the path are centuries old. This hiking route offers a wealth of vantage points, natural monuments and tempting taverns for a stopover. An equally rewarding alternative leads through the autumnal spectacle of the Wine and Apple Trail, with its golden vineyards and apple orchards extending between Brixen and Neustift.

The original Törggelen

The Eisacktal valley is the place where the Törggelen originated, one of South Tyrol’s most beloved traditions. In the past, local farmers used to celebrate the end of harvest by tasting the new wine and roasted chestnuts together with their friends and neighbours. In time, this custom evolved into what is now a real experience that combines landscape and culinary pleasures. Today, the original Törggelen begins with a nice walk, followed by a hearty meal at a local tavern serving traditional specialities like Schlutzer filled with spinach, home-made sausages and smoked meat with sauerkraut, sweet Krapfen and, of course, roasted chestnuts and new wine. Not a big fan of walking? No problem: you can skip the trekking part. The Aichnerhof tavern is within easy reach of our hotel and serves a delicious Törggelen menu!
